The Strange Object Under the Bed

Eventually, the mystery resolved itself.

The object was an old veterinary mouth gag—a tool used to gently hold an animal’s jaws open during treatment.

Practical, clinical, and far less alarming than it first appeared.

Even with that explanation, the feeling lingered.

Holding it, I couldn’t help but think about where it had been, who had used it, and how it ended up under the bed.

Moving into a new space isn’t just about bringing your own belongings—it can also mean encountering traces of lives lived before yours.

And sometimes, those traces carry stories you’ll never fully know.
