Omeprazole is prescribed to tackle common ailments such as heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux, but extended or regular use of the drug can lead to a range of complications. According to one gut health expert, some of these problems can appear on your skin.
Dr Sari Arponen, a specialist in gut microbiota, warned that omeprazole and other commonly-prescribed medications could be behind certain skin conditions. Speaking on COPE Cool, the expert explained how our gut health can affect the state of our skin and offer insights into what’s happening inside our bodies.
She even suggested: “Skin treatment could involve personalised analyses of the microbiota.”
Gut health relies on a delicately balanced mix of different bacteria types, which is vital for our digestion, immune system and metabolism. When the bacteria is correctly balanced, the skin stays better hydrated and repairs itself efficiently because the gut sends “calming, anti-inflammatory signals”.
When these bacteria fall out of balance, it can lead to inflammation and related skin issues. The doctor pointed out that rosacea, which triggers facial redness and bumps, is commonly linked with an overabundance of a specific bacteria in the small intestine.
